Ridership Going Strong After 6 Months

Continuing to Seek Input from Community on Biki Expansion

It’s been six months since the launch of Biki, and we are happy to report that ridership continues to go up! As of December 31, 2017, a total of 360,729 rides had been taken on Biki, more than doubling the 180,272 rides during the first three months of operation. Even more amazing is that nearly two-thirds (231,414) of those trips were taken by Oahu residents, as indicated by the reported zip code for each of those trips. We are proud to see residents learn about and adopt Biki so quickly.

Biki members and casual riders use Biki somewhat differently. Biki members’ average trip duration of 12 minutes and 53 seconds is lower than that of casual riders’ 26 minutes and 50 seconds. Members’ shorter trips suggest regular, purposeful use—to and from the office, to meetings, to lunch, for quick errands. This was supported by the Biki member survey conducted at the end of October 2017 which found that 60 percent of respondents said they use Biki to dine, 56 percent use Biki to shop, and 36 percent use Biki to commute to work. 59 percent of respondents said they used their car most of the time or all of the time before Biki, indicating bikeshare is helping Honolulu replace car trips with bikes!

We are encouraged by how many requests we’ve received for Biki Stops in recent months. Since the “request a station” form was added to biki12-23.test on October 14, there have been 133 requests submitted for Biki Stops in neighborhoods currently not being served by Biki, or suggestions for infill within the current service area (Downtown to Waikiki). The most popular requests for Biki Stops include Makiki, University of Hawaii, Kapiolani Park and Iwilei/Dole Cannery.

Community input is an important part of designing an effective and convenient bikeshare system, and as we work on expanding Biki service in 2018, we very much still want to hear from you. So tell us. Where do you want a Biki Stop? What can you share about your neighborhood that can help guide us? If you see gaps in our existing network or would like to see a Biki Stop near your home or work, please fill out the “request a station”. Include your contact information if you’re willing to advocate for Biki Stops where you live, work, and play.

A dense network of Biki Stops helps ensure bikes and open docks are available where and when riders need them. We anticipate adding somewhere between 30 and 50 new Biki Stops this year. Stayed tuned for updates!

In the meantime, Biki will be taking part in University of Hawaii at Manoa’s upcoming BikeUHM event on Tuesday, February 6 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Campus Center Courtyard. If you are a student, staff, or faculty, we welcome you to stop by our tent to learn more about Biki and complete a request a station form if you would like to have a Biki Stop on or near campus, or along your daily route to campus.

Lastly, as shared in last month’s newsletter, The City and County of Honolulu’s Department of Transportation Services (DTS) is updating its Oahu Bike Plan and also needs your input. If you haven’t already, please take this short survey to provide feedback as to how the City can improve bicycling conditions across the island and reduce barriers that prevent people from riding their bikes.

Biki Bicycling Basics Free Workshops

Since July, Bikeshare Hawaii and Hawaii Bicycling League (HBL) have partnered to offer free Biki Bicycling Basics workshops. More than 250 people have taken advantage of the workshops to review Honolulu’s bicycling rules, learn about good bike etiquette, and get a chance to try out a Biki bike to become acclimated with riding on Honolulu’s streets. We are pleased to continue to offer these free classes; anyone interested can register onwww.HBL.org/BikiBasics. There is a limit of 14 participants per workshop.

If you are interested in a free workshop for a group, please contact info@bikesharehawaii.org.

Major Donor Spotlight: Hawai‘i Pacific Health

We truly appreciate major donors like Hawai’i Pacific Health, who support our mission.

Creating a Healthier Hawai‘i with Biki

At Hawai‘i Pacific Health, our mission is to create a healthier Hawai‘i. Our four medical centers – Kapi‘olani, Pali Momi, Straub and Wilcox – and more than 70 locations statewide provide high quality medical care for our patients. To help us achieve our mission, we are working to extend that care into our communities and partnering with local organizations that share our philosophy of health and well-being. That’s why we were excited to partner with Bikeshare Hawaii for the launch of Biki in 2017, and why we’re proud to continue to be one of the major #GoBikiHI sponsors in 2018.

Exercise plays a key role in minimizing the impacts of chronic health conditions like heart disease and diabetes, and also offers other benefits like improvements in body image and mood, better mental health and decreased stress, and a stronger immune system. With 360,729 total rides in its first six months of operation, Biki has helped make bicycling a fun and easy option for O‘ahu residents and visitors to get their daily dose of physical activity and enjoy the outdoors.

Another great opportunity for people of all ages and fitness levels to better their health is the Hawai‘i Pacific Health Great Aloha Run. More than 20,000 people make this event a President’s Day tradition each year, and this year’s race is right around the corner on Monday, Feb. 19.

Though Great Aloha Run participants will be pounding the pavement by foot, Biki will be on the race course as several of our Hawai‘i Pacific Health medical personnel will patrol the 8.15-mile route from Aloha Tower to Aloha Stadium on blue Biki bikes. If you’re registered for the Great Aloha Run, Biki is also a great alternative to get to the starting line. For more details on this year’s event, visit www.GreatAlohaRun.com.

Whether you walk, run or Biki, we encourage you all to take the steps toward a healthier you and join us in creating a #HealthierHawaii.

Name: Lisette

Pass: Free Spirit; I chose the Free Spirit Pass because I knew I would want it for more than half an hour. I also knew I didn’t want to commit to a full on plan with out knowing how much I would actually be using it. Seemed like the best deal at the time to test it out and really get a feel for it.

How I use Biki: I use Biki mainly for casual rides to nearby places and lighthearted adventures. I really enjoy the bike stations, not having to find parking, and not having to own a bike since my place has no room to store one. I think it’s great during events around town when parking can be scarce.

Have you tried Biki and would like to provide feedback about your experience? Then give us a rating on yelp!

As a community-based organization, we welcome input from Biki users as we work towards our goal of providing convenient and affordable mobility in urban Honolulu. Is Biki helping you to get around town faster? Are you using your car less frequently and saving money on parking? Are you trying new dining or retailers because it’s easier to get to with Biki? We’d love to hear what role Biki plays in your life since our launch last summer!

We send out a monthly e-newsletter to update our riders on the latest Biki info, news, events, promos and more. Don’t miss out – subscribe today!

2017 was an exciting year for Biki. We officially launched on June 28th, joining a growing network of over 60 bikeshare cities across the nation. We’re grateful to have observed Honolulu embrace this new form of transportation and excited to update you on the various trends, statistics and records we have compiled from Biki’s initial 6-months.

Out of 360,729 total rides, nearly two-thirds (231,414) were taken by Oahu residents, as indicated by the reported zip code for each of those trips.

“We are encouraged to see that ridership continues to grow. It illustrates without a doubt we are fulfilling our mission to provide a viable transportation option for both kamaaina and visitors,” said Lori McCarney, CEO of Bikeshare Hawaii. “We’re especially delighted to see that the majority of trips are made by residents, not visitors. We know that many visitors arrive here already familiar with bikeshare in their home cities. Seeing residents learn about and adopt Biki so quickly makes us proud.”

Most Popular Member Plan

The $20 Free Spirit Plan remains the most popular of the three member pricing plans which offers a bank of 300 minutes (or five hours) to use however and whenever.

Monthly plans ($25 and $15 options) are on the rise, 34% compared to 22% at the 3-month mark, showing that more members are using and relying on Biki consistently and regularly.

Top Biki Stops

Out of the top 10 most utilized Biki Stops, 7 are in Waikiki and 3 in Ala Moana/Kakaako. The top 3 rider zip codes remain 96815 (Waikiki), 96813 (Downtown/Chinatown) and 96826 (McCully/Moiliili), demonstrating that residents contribute significantly to the popularity of Waikiki Biki Stops.

Records & Trends

The highest number of rides taken on a single day is November 3, the day that President Trump arrived on island for a stopover on his trip to Asia. People were aware of the planned road closures and expected traffic congestion and opted for Biki as an alternative form of transportation. This exceeded our previous record of 2,746 rides on July 4th,when parking was at a minimum for the Ala Moana fireworks show.

The slowest day was on December 26 when Oahu was hit with flash flood warnings and torrential downpours. Shout out to the riders who chose to brave it on a Biki that day! Although poor conditions have a noticeable impact on usage, we’re fortunate to have some of the best weather in the country, allowing us to operate year-round.

Trip Duration

Members’ shorter trips suggest regular, purposeful use—to and from the office, to meetings, to lunch, for quick errands. Casual riders may be more likely to simply explore and sightsee without building a ridership pattern. It’s interesting to note Biki’s use for shopping, dining, and exercise among all types of riders.

Biki Bicycling Basics

Since July, Hawaii Bicycling League and Bikeshare Hawaii have offered regular 2-hour workshops reviewing Biki bikeshare, Honolulu’s bicycling laws and safe cycling tips. These ongoing classes are free and open to the public. Register online to reserve your spot!

Community Input

Since the “request a station” form was added in mid-October, there have been 81 new Biki Stop locations suggested by members of the community. The most popular requests include Makiki, University of Hawaii, Kapiolani Park and Iwilei/Dole Cannery.

“As we develop expansion plans for Biki in 2018, we’re aligning them with location requests we receive from the community,” says Lori McCarney, CEO of Bikeshare Hawaii. “From the beginning, public input has been a priority for our program. We are delighted by the feedback and support we have received from the community so far, and seek ongoing input to finalize locations for Biki’s next phase. We expect to be able to add somewhere between 30 and 50 new Biki Stops as early as summer so more folks will be able to conveniently connect to Biki’s existing 100-station network.”

Improving Mobility and Connectivity in 2018

What an exciting year 2017 has been as we formally launched Biki, Hawaii’s first full-scale bikeshare system. 2018 will see the development and implementation of more projects that will enhance mobility, connectivity, and overall safety for all modes of transportation. Honolulu needs your input!

Now that you’re a seasoned bikeshare user, where do you want to see Biki expand? Where do you see gaps? Where does a Biki Stop need to be that would make your daily trips easier? There are several ways you can share your thoughts with us:

The City and County of Honolulu’s Department of Transportation Services (DTS) recently announced the update of the Oahu Bike Plan (2012), which will include a low-stress network of bikeways for existing and prospective bicyclists with a wide range of skill levels. DTS also announced the creation of the Oahu Pedestrian Plan, a long-term action plan that aims to create vibrant, safe, and accessible streetscapes that can serve as a model for other cities. Additionally, Complete Streets planning and design projects are underway in several communities across the island, and the City continues to solicit community input and feedback.

In addition to attending public meetings to get informed and share your thoughts on projects going on in your communities, share your feedback with your City Council and Neighborhood Board representatives. Your representatives will advocate for the projects they know their constituents care about!

Bikeshare Hawaii looks forward to another year of working closely with our City partners and community stakeholders on improving mobility and quality of life across the island.

New Biki Stop at HMSA

There is a new Biki Stop in town! A new 15-dock station is located outside the HMSA building at the corner of Rycroft and Keeaumoku Streets. Now you have more chances to ride over and enjoy shopping at retailers including Walmart and dining establishments including Yogurstory, Teapresso, among many others.

HMSA has been a major supporter of Bikeshare Hawaii since the beginning stages, and as an organization dedicated to providing sustainable healthcare and promoting wellness, they were interested in a bikeshare station and even poured the concrete pad to accommodate the equipment. We are happy to provide employees and patients of HMSA a healthy and convenient alternative to get to and from work and appointments.

If you wish to have a Biki Stop in your neighborhood, complete the Request a Station form on biki12-23.test.

Biki partners with Lyft to promote safe riding habits and multi-modal transportation

We are happy to announce a new partnership with ridesharing service Lyft to offer discounts to Biki riders. Effective immediately, new users to Lyft can get $5 off each of their first four Lyft rides when they download the Lyft app and input the code, “BIKILYFT” to redeem offer. In addition, Lyft will donate $10 to Bikeshare Hawaii for every new user that signs up using the “BIKILYFT” code.

In many instances, Biki is a great way to get from place to place. But, we also recognized that there are times when riders will want to Biki somewhere and have another way to get back. That’s why we are delighted to be partnering with Lyft to offer Biki users a convenient option for their return trips.

We also want to remind Biki members that drinking and riding don’t mix. If you choose to Biki to a bar or party and celebrate the holiday season with a few adult beverages, we recommend catching a Lyft ride home. Since you used bikeshare to get there you won’t have to worry about leaving your car or personal bike, and you’ll arrive safe and sound to your destination!

Already a Lyft user? Stay tuned for special promotion codes during upcoming events that can be applied to existing accounts.

Venture Race Hawaii

Early in the morning on Sunday, December 3, eight teams of three female athletes dressed in their most creative costumes participated in Venture Race Hawaii – Biki Edition. The competitors met up at 5:45 a.m. at the Biki Stop at the Ala Moana Beach Park entrance located at Atkinson Drive and Ala Moana Drive.

During the heated competition, the teams had to decipher clues and Biki their way to four Biki Stops located from Ala Moana to Downtown Honolulu. Upon arriving at each location, the teams were required to dock their Biki bikes, complete fun tasks, and post evidence of themselves completing the task to Facebook and Instagram to get the next clue. Their tasks included a ballet performance at Boca Hawaii, singing Christmas Carols at the Honolulu City Lights, showing their best Elvis dance moves at the Elvis statue at the Neal Blaisdell Center, and the mannequin challenge at the Man at the Bus Stop statue at Bishop Street and King Street. The final clue lead them back to Ala Moana Beach Park where they jumped into the water to herd a flock of floating rubber ducks around a bouy and ended the race with a sprint up the beach to the finish line.

All team members were Biki members, but no entry fee was required.  In the spirit of the holiday season, participants were asked to bring one toy to be donated to Toys for Tots. The group collected 23 toys from the participants.

If you are interested in including Biki in an upcoming event, simply fill out an Event Opportunity Request Form!

Two Options for Tax Deduction

Your last chance to make a 2017 tax deductible donation is coming up. We hope that you will consider a donation to Bikeshare Hawaii or our Adopt-a-Biki donation program.

As a community-based nonprofit organization, Bikeshare Hawaii relies on support from organizations and individuals that share our vision of Hawaii: To provide the public with high quality, convenient and affordable bikeshare services that strengthen our public transportation system and connect people to more places where they live, work and play throughout Hawaii nei. Bikeshare Hawaii benefits Hawaii residents and visitors by providing a low-cost, convenient, zero emissions transportation option that is healthy for the community and the environment.

When you Adopt-a-Biki for $1000, you create a personalized inscription that will be placed on a Biki. Then, you will be able to check on your adopted Biki’s activities for years on the dashboard, including: How many people have used it? How many miles has it logged? How many calories has it helped folks burn?

Simply visit GoBiki.org to test out different inscriptions, for more details on the program, and to Adopt-a-Biki. The first 100 bikes adopted will include the “Early Adopter” insignia on the bike.

BIKI/BIKESHARE HAWAII IN THE COMMUNITY

We have been busy bringing Biki to our communities, and are delighted to be introducing the bike and program to more people.

The Jingle Rock Run on December 17 was a blast. We loved dressing up in our most festive holiday attire and interacting with everyone that stopped by our tent. We are delighted to support Make-a-Wish Hawaii and it was a great way to see the Honolulu City Lights through this family-friendly holiday event.

We also participated in our first holiday parade, the Kapahulu-Moiliili Christmas Parade, on December 14. It was so much fun riding our Biki bikes on King Street and saying hi to the community members that came out to watch the parade.

On November 29, we shared the story of bikeshare and how Biki can help build business awareness to members of the Chinese Chamber of Commerce at the Chamber’s Visioning Center in Chinatown. Following the presentation, many members Biki’d to the SALT Block in Kakaako to experience Biki and get to know each other better.

We are proud to be members of the Chinese Chamber of Commerce and look forward to working together with them for the benefit of the Chinatown community.

The Honolulu Marathon

Sunday, December 10th, 5am

Honolulu is home to the fourth largest marathon in the United States, attracting over 30,000 participants! We’re excited to serve as a resource for runners, spectators, and city residents during one of the busiest weekends of the year.

Picking up your race packet? Warm up your legs and avoid parking by going for a short ride to one the 3 Biki Stops surrounding the Convention Center. Biki can also be used the day of the event to bring you back home or to your vehicle after you complete the race.

Cheering on a friend? With Biki, spectators now have the opportunity to support their friends at more spots along the course! After your runner goes by, grab a bike and beat them to the next section to continue the encouragement. We’re sure they’ll appreciate the support!

To accommodate the marathon, several road closures will occur including Ala Moana Blvd, King Street, Kapiolani, Kalakaua and Kapahulu. Additionally, some bus routes will be canceled and/or detoured. Choose Biki during this busy Sunday to avoid traffic complications caused by detours.

Nearby Biki Stops: All over town!

Honolulu City Lights

Honolulu Hale and Civic Center Grounds

Month of December, 8:00am-11:00pm

Honolulu City Lights at Honolulu Hale is a month long Christmas celebration featuring elaborate decorations, food vendors, daily activities, and special events.

Nearby Biki Stops: 126 King & Alapai (Fasi Building!), 125 King & Punchbowl, 123 Beretania & Lauhala

Get the Mobile App and make your Biki trip even easier! The App not only shows the location of all 100 Biki Stops, but also displays the real-time availability of bikes and docks at each stop. Before going for a ride, we recommend checking the App to avoid completely empty or full stations. Our team of rebalances will be monitoring the system and restocking stations to accommodate the increase in riders, but appreciate your patience during busy weekends such as these!

Launched in 2012, #GivingTuesday is a global giving movement that harnesses the power of social media to make positive change in communities around the world. It brings together organizations, nonprofits, businesses, groups and individuals to encourage random acts of kindness and kick-off the season of giving.

Bikeshare Hawaii was established in January 2014 as a not-for-profit 501(c)3 organization with the mission to launch and manage the Biki bikeshare program in Honolulu. Already a Lyft user? Stay tuned for special promotion codes during upcoming events that can be applied to existing accounts.

Looking for a special gift for that person who is always difficult to shop for? This holiday season, Bikeshare Hawaii suggests Adopting a Biki in their honor! Besides gifting something that is unique and personal, your donation is tax deductible.

When you Adopt-a-Biki for $1000, you create a personalized inscription that will be placed on a Biki. Then, you will be able to check the dashboard to view your adopted Biki’s activities for years, including: How many people have used it? How many miles has it logged? How many calories has it helped folks burn?

As a nonprofit organization, Bikeshare Hawaii relies upon community support to provide Biki as a healthy, clean and affordable transportation option for residents and visitors. The Adopt-a-Biki program was created as a personal and engaging way to support Bikeshare Hawaii’s mission. It’s a great and unexpected holiday gift for that special someone in your life, and can easily be purchased on GoBiki.org right up until Christmas as a last minute gift.

The Biki program is very much a community effort. We truly appreciate everyone’s support in making this public-private-nonprofit partnership succeed. Simply visit GoBiki.org to test out different inscriptions, for more details on the program, and to Adopt-a-Biki. The first 100 bikes adopted will include the “Early Adopter” insignia on the bike.

Speaking of Early Adopters, we are thankful to those who have already adopted a Biki and recently reached out to a few to find out what their inspiration was for joining and the meaning behind their inscription.

Jeanne M. – “Zoobombing Hawaiian Style”

My husband and I transferred to Hawaii from Portland in 2012. As you probably know, Portland is very bike-friendly, even though the weather is far from ideal for bike riding most of the year. We were both very disappointed to see how much reliance on cars there was here in Honolulu, and how little bike riding infrastructure existed, especially since the weather is ideal year round. When it was announced in 2015 that a bikesharing option was coming to Honolulu, we were ecstatic. The more bikes we get on the road, the more cars will be aware of us and bike-riding will become safer for all of us.

The inscription, “Zoobombing Hawaiian Style”, was a no-brainer for us. The bike was adopted in memory of my son, Ryan, who passed in 2014 at age 33. Zoobombing is a weekly activity in Portland that began in 2002.  Participants, primarily young adults, meet at an uphill spot near the Oregon Zoo. They bring what is typically a custom kiddie bike to race downhill on. The preferred bike is a 12-incher (typically used by three year olds). The smaller the bike is, the faster you go!  Ryan loved to zoobomb!

Elemental Excelerator – “#innovatingfor100”

At Elemental Excelerator, we believe that a healthy community offers a variety of transit options, one of which is riding bicycles! Supporting Bikeshare Hawaii to launch a system that connects Honolulu’s urban core is important for our community. It creates a mobility platform that startups in our portfolio can innovate on and supports our mission by not only creating infrastructure that provides a platform for innovation, but also transforms communities to benefit our keiki and beyond.

Elemental Excelerator’s inscription of “#innovatingfor100” means that we are innovating for 100% clean energy, providing access to clean energy for 100% of the people in our community, and innovating for 100% of our ecosystem, including water, agriculture, and transportation systems!

Justine E. – “The Greener Reader – GOMOBAAT”

To celebrate my 31st birthday, I set a goal of getting 31 members of my book club, The Greener Reader, to donate $31 dollars, towards adopting a bike. I would cover the remaining $39. The stars were aligned for Biki to launch during my birth season.

GOMOBAAT stands for Greening Our Minds One Book At A Time. Our book club, The Greener Reader, focuses on reading and discussing texts (and sometimes film) that intersect with the topics of sustainability, conservation, democracy, civic engagement and environmental ethic. Biki is good for the environment by reducing fossil fuels and carbon emissions. It also connects people to their communities. Both Biki and The Greener Reader are dear to my heart, and I love that with the help of my generous friends and family, that I am able to connect them and share their message with other Biki riders and book club members.

Volunteers Needed for 2017 Oahu Bike Count

Hawaii Bicycling League is seeking volunteers for its annual Oahu Bike Count from November 14 to 16. This 3-day event has more than 100 volunteer positions available in 10 locations throughout the island. HBL’s Oahu Bike Count is important because it helps the organization advocate for more bikeways and bikeable streets. Data collected in 2016 showed that the quality of bicycle infrastructure plays a clear factor in whether people would ride on it or take the sidewalk.

If you are interested in volunteering, please visit HBL’s Bike Count page.

Learn more about Complete Streets and Share Your Ideas for Honolulu

The City and County of Honolulu Complete Streets Program invites community input on solutions to make streets within Honolulu’s urban core safer for pedestrians, bicyclists, bus riders, and motorists. The project includes portions of King Street, Kapi‘olani Boulevard, Pi‘ikoi Street, Pensacola Street, Punchbowl Street, Ward Avenue, Kalākaua Avenue, Kamake‘e Street, and others.

An online interactive website, a survey, and a series of public events are being launched this month to gather input on issues, ideas, and possible solutions being considered. Community input will inform design solutions that balance the needs of the urban core’s diverse users and match community character.

The next sit-down sessions will be held on Friday, November 17. These two-hour public workshops will focus on a particular neighborhood, and will include a presentation and discussion of neighborhood-level issues, ideas, and solutions. The Lower Makiki workshop will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. while the Ward/Ala Moana workshop will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Both workshops will be at the Neal Blaisdell Center’s Oahu Room.

Refreshments will be provided; please RSVP online.

Biki is a good way to get around today and tomorrow.

President Trump’s visit to Honolulu to cause major traffic congestion but Biki is an option!

WHAT: Bikeshare Hawaii reminds residents and visitors that Biki provides an easy and convenient way to get around urban Honolulu during President Trump’s visit to Honolulu today and tomorrow. With several road and sidewalk closures planned for Waikiki, anticipated traffic congestion caused by these closures and the president’s motorocade, as well as planned protests, Biki provides riders an easy and convenient transportation alternative.

WHEN Friday, November 3 until Saturday, November 4

DETAILS: With nearly one hundred Biki Stops and 1000 bikes between downtown Honolulu and Waikiki, Biki provides a convenient way to move around instead of being stuck in traffic today and tomorrow.  If you’re not a Biki member, you can purchase trips at any Biki Stop in minutes.  Or, you can sign up for a Biki Membership on the Biki App or at biki12-23.test to access a Biki via the app.

Customer Support is available every day from 6am to 11pm.  Call 888-340-2454 if you need assistance.

Biki riders are encouraged to download the Biki App via the respective Apple or Google mobile app stores. Biki will be working hard to have bikes where needed, but Biki Vans will be hampered by traffic issues. Riders can also view the map of Biki stops here.

Biki riders are reminded to follow Honolulu ordinances and heed any traffic guidance or detours that are in place because of the president’s stay. Biki riders are also reminded that biking on sidewalks in Waikiki and Downtown is prohibited.
