Environmental Benefits of Bikeshare

unnamed (1)

Earth Day was April 22. How did you spend the day? Did you use Biki?

Bike share systems are great for the environment by improving air quality. Bikeshare benefits Hawaii residents and visitors by providing a zero emissions transportation option that is healthy for the environment as well as our community. This is because Biki reduces or eliminates parking, gas, traffic and the use of fossil fuels by getting people out of cars.

unnamed (2)

By reducing the number of cars on Hawaii’s roads, Biki also is reducing noise pollution. Transportation options such as automobiles and buses contribute an excessive amount of noise into the environment.

So the next time you go out for a shopping or dining excursion, consider Biki for your trip. You’ll be doing your part to make Hawaii’s environment a better and healthier place to work, live and play.

Biki Tip - Adjust your seat before you start your ride!

unnamed (10)

The Biki bike is designed to be especially easy to handle for all users, including women and those who are a bit on the smaller side, but also a great ride for taller folks, too.

Before you hop on a Biki, remember to adjust your seat to allow for a more comfortable ride. The seat height can be adjusted in seconds! We recommend having a slight bend in your knee when the ball of your foot is on the pedal. This will optimize pedal power and reduce pressure on your knees. With adjustment marks along the side, you will know exactly which height fits you best next time you Biki!

Pro Tip: Tighten/loosen tension on the seat post. Every once in awhile it might be really tough to pull out the seat lever to adjust seat height. Or maybe worse, you get shorter and shorter while riding as the seat slips down. Twist the release lever or the hand screw on the seat post (lefty loosee-righty-tightee) until it’s just right.

Plan: $25 Monthly Plan; For my purposes (work chores, commuting, shopping, dining, entertainment, and my favorite, a weekend Diamond Head perimeter ride), 60-minute rides is more than enough for 95% of everywhere I need to go. $25 is a great value!

Why I love Biki: It’s a high. It's fun. It energizes me. It's helping me get in shape. I’m 60 but Biki makes me feel like a teen. It’s a newfound freedom where I can travel all over the city in less time.  Combined with ride sharing and the bus, the options are endless. I’m self-employed and it adds hours to my work week not having to deal with traffic and parking. My wife and I joke we can’t remember where we last parked our car. I’ve reduced my gasoline consumption by 80% and gained 3 or 4 hours a week not sitting in a car going nowhere. Bicycle quality is fantastic and very easy for a big guy to pedal.

Hale Mahana Signs On As Biki Donor

Bikeshare Hawaii March E-Newsletter

We send out a monthly e-newsletter to update our riders on the latest Biki info, news, events, promos and more. Don’t miss out – subscribe today!

We are excited to announce that Hale Mahana, the soon to be completed off-campus apartments for students in Moiliili, is supporting Biki with a major donation! Hale Mahana is located at the corner of University Avenue and S. King Street, adjacent to the University of Hawaii at Manoa and Chaminade University, and a short bus ride to Hawaii Pacific University.

With this new relationship, Biki and Hale Mahana will work together to provide an affordable and sustainable transportation option for UH students, faculty, and staff, as well as the community. Biki’s goal is to have five to six Biki Stops at the Manoa campus this summer and a new Biki Stop location right at Hale Mahana. In addition, our summer expansion plans include Biki Stops in Makiki mauka of the H-1 freeway and some in-fill in Moiliili to ensure that there is an efficient route leading to the university.

“One of our platforms for resident living is our Live Here. Live Well. campaign. We want to encourage living a healthy lifestyle while enjoying where you live, so the partnership with Biki is an exciting one for us! We’re thrilled to have our own Biki Stop on site that will help our residents and community residents get around easily and inexpensively all while reducing traffic,” said LaNiece Dillon, Hale Mahana Community Manager.

Expanding our system will allow UH students, faculty and staff members to connect to the current Biki network that spans from Downtown to Diamond Head. Not only will they will be able to use Biki when commuting to and from campus, they also can take advantage of the many retailers, food establishments, entertainment and businesses located conveniently within Biki’s 100 station network.

“As a student at Texas Tech University, I did a case study on Wall-to-Wall Studios and their branding of Biki! I loved the idea of a bikeshare program in a city that was efficient and user-friendly. Flash forward several months and after moving from Lubbock, Texas to Honolulu, Hawaii I was able to use and see these bikes in action. It was such a cool experience to see something I read about and did presentations about in real life! After starting as the leasing and marketing manager, I leapt at the opportunity to help support this program that wants to better the community, much like Hale Mahana! We are so excited to partner with a great organization and brand,” added Amanda Leilani, Hale Mahana Leasing and Marketing Manager.

Hale Mahana offers apartments ranging in size from studios to four bedroom apartments with amenities including a rooftop fitness center, computer lab, breakout rooms for study groups, and laundry rooms on each floor. The first floor will have seven restaurants and shops including Pieology and Jersey Mike’s. Hale Mahana’s apartments are not exclusively for students, but are built to suit a collegiate lifestyle, with individual leases and community-wide events.

Students will be moving in August 2018, just in time for the fall semester. For more information about Hale Mahana, please visit its website or stop by the leasing office across S. King Street from the construction of the apartments (in Puck’s Alley). Biki Stop #458 is right outside!

On March 22, Bikeshare Hawaii joined over 150 other members of the community to hear from the City’s Complete Streets team about what they’re proposing for Pensacola Street and Ward Avenue improvements. It was great to hear that their plans are informed by data and community input: feedback given during the early outreach phase influenced the city to consider protected bike lanes on Pensacola Street instead of the originally proposed Piikoi Street. A survey that was conducted also indicated that 18% of those living within the Honolulu Urban Core do not own a car and 10% bike to and from work or school. This supports the need for street improvements that accommodate a variety of transportation modes. And in fact, 76% of those surveyed support complete streets policies that call for streets and sidewalks to be designed to accommodate all users and modes safely.

After the presentation concluded, attendees reviewed copies of the proposed project plans and offered site specific feedback and comments. The City’s complete streets team will take these into consideration as they finalize the project plans.

Bikeshare Hawaii CEO Lori McCarney Receives PBN’s Women Who Means Business Award

Bikeshare Hawaii CEO Lori McCarney was recently honored with Pacific Business News‘ Women Who Mean Business Award. Lori was recognized for successfully implementing Hawaii’s first bikeshare service. This is truly a well-deserved award as Lori has worked tirelessly over the past three years to make bikeshare a reality for our state. In less than nine months of service, Biki has amassed more than 560,000 rides!

Congratulations, Lori! We are honored to have such a dedicated and passionate woman leading our team.

Watch a video of Lori accepting her award, on what else, a Biki bike!

REMINDER:
Don’t Ride on Sidewalks in Waikiki

We love seeing so many people enjoying the use of Biki to get around town. However, we also would like to remind Biki users that riding on sidewalks, especially in business areas, is strictly prohibited.

If you are riding in Waikiki, please use the single-bike lanes on Kalakaua Avenue when going Diamond Head bound.

If you are going Ewa Bound, please use the single-bike lanes on Ala Wai Boulevard, not the Ala Wai promenade which is for pedestrians only.

Free Biki Open Houses, March 29, April 10 and 17

Attend Open Houses in Waikiki, Makiki, and Chinatown to learn more about Biki, Honolulu’s bikeshare program, and review proposed sites

Want to see Biki in your neighborhood and learn more about Honolulu’s bikeshare program? Or do you want to share your thoughts about Biki and participate in the upcoming expansion phase? Bikeshare Hawaii invites the public to attend a Biki Open House to get the latest updates on the Biki program and learn more about the summer expansion plan. Attendees will be able to review potential sites for up to 50 new Biki Stop locations, suggest new Biki Stop locations, share input and ask questions. Representatives from the Hawaii Bicycling League and the City and County’s Complete Streets Program will have informational tables about safety, cycling laws, and planned infrastructure improvements. Community partners such as Hawaii Pacific Health, HMSABlue Zones Hawaii and Hale Mahana will also be in attendance to speak about how bikeshare supports their initiatives related to improving public health in Hawaii.

Featured Biki Member of the Month

Name: Cody

Plan: $25 Monthly Plan; I chose this plan because of the flexibility it offers me to go on longer distance rides. I can go for a good hour-long ride in the morning without any interruptions. Biki helps me stay in shape, and is way more fun and cost efficient than a gym membership.

Why I love Biki: As a student of Urban and Regional Planning at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, I am thrilled to see our city being proactive towards offering alternatives to automobile transportation. Biki will take more cars off the roads, which will reduce green house gas emissions and relieve congestion on our busy streets! Biki also is an affordable commuting option for those who can’t afford the bus pass. Most importantly, it’s healthy and fun! I wake up every morning and take Biki around town and along the coast for an early morning workout. It’s the perfect way to start my day!

Yesterday Biki got a little bit bigger as we increased the size of four existing Biki Stops and installed two brand new ones! This mini expansion added 58 docking points, bringing the system total to 1713, to accommodate the heavy use and growing demand in these areas.

Riders can now check in and out bikes from Waikiki Biki Stop #333 on Paokalani and Ala Wai Boulevard. This new station will help to alleviate the traffic from our most popular Biki Stop (#331) found just a few blocks away, and will offer greater assurance that bikes and docks are available when you need them. We also filled in a gap right outside Pacific Park Plaza in Kakaako with the addition of #208 on Cooke and Kawaiahao. Located in close proximity to residential units and popular businesses such as Kaiser, La Cucina, the Rice Place, and Cooke Street Market, this station is sure to be a popular one!

The team also added extra docking points to the following popular Biki Stops:

– Biki Stop #236 Piikoi & Waimanu
– Biki Stop #207 Ilalo & Coral
– Biki Stop #520 Kanaina & Monsarrat
– Biki Stop #318 Lewers & Manukai
(locations indicated in yellow in the map below)

2 Biki Stops added (green), 4 expanded (yellow)

Practice makes perfect. Despite the rain, less than 6 hours were needed to complete all 6 projects. The new Biki Stops were turned on and available on the Biki App immediately. Yesterday’s installation served as great practice for our larger expansion phase – coming up this summer! See the potential sites and learn more about our plans on our website.

Don’t forget to stop by our first Expansion Open House anytime between 6-8pm next Thursday 3/29 at Jefferson Elementary School. We’ll have lots of info about our summer plans and would love to hear from the community and answer any questions you may have. Free and open to the public, parking is available on Wai Nani Way. Additional Open Houses will be held on 4/10 and 4/17.

A huge mahalo to those who participated in #BIKI4K yesterday! Riders completed a total of 3,177 trips, officially setting the new record for the total number of trips taken in a single day.

Nearly 500 new Biki users redeemed their free trip! We talked to some residents who had not been on a bike in over 10 years and others who were encouraged to give it a try by their friends who are already Biki members.

Did you know?

• Sunday happens to be our slowest day of the week with a previous record of 2489 and a daily average of 1808.
• The previous record took place on Friday, November 3 when President Trump was in town and residents were informed of traffic advisories and road closures.

Missed out on BIKI4K? You still have the opportunity to give Biki a try for free by signing up for a Biki Bicycling Basics course taught by Hawaii Bicycling League. The next workshop is Saturday, March 10 from 9:30-11:30am!

We also offer a variety of affordable memberships GoBiki.org. Our popular Free Spirit Plan offers a bank of 300-minutes for $20, costing riders only around 6 cents per minute. If you ride more often, check out our unlimited monthly options to get the biggest bang for your buck!

We loved seeing the photos and videos of your #BIKI4K adventures on FacebookTwitter and Instagram! Stay tuned for future social media competitions and be sure to tag @GoBikiHI for the chance to be featured.

Have you heard? This Sunday, March 4 we’re on a mission to beat the current Biki record and achieve over 4000 rides in one day. Best of all, for the first time ever we’ll also be offering one free 30-min trip for all new users.  Here are some tips and tricks to make the most of this occasion:

The Biki App shows the location of every Biki Stops and the availability of bikes and open docks. It is also the easiest way for a new user to register and redeem a free ride. Use it to plan your route, time your trip, and find nearby attractions!

Once you redeem your free single ride, a release code will be generated immediately and will only last for 5 minutes at that specific Biki Stop. Make sure you’re already at the Biki Stop and ready to ride.

The green light signals the start and end of your ride. If you do not see a green light when returning your bike to it’s docking point, pull it out and try again. If in doubt, call customer service at 888-340-2454 to ask if the bike was successfully returned and your ride time has ended.

Pro tip: Enter a valid cell phone number when registering and to receive a message every time your bike is successfully docked.

Biking is always better with a buddy so start recruiting a friend for a Biki adventure. Plan to Biki to brunch, ride to the beach or explore a new part of the city. Don’t forget to post pics of your excursions and include the tag #BIKI4K for the chance to be featured!

Biki members will be roaming the city with prizes and helping new users redeem their free ride. You may even get randomly selected to win some Biki Swag or monthly memberships! If you need help or have any questions you can also call customer service at 888-340-2454!

Whether you ride every day or haven’t been on a bike in years it is always good to familiarize yourself with safety tips and bike laws. You can find this information on the back of every kiosk map and on our website.

Bikeshare Hawaii February E-Newsletter

Residents participating in a Free Biki Bicycling Basics workshop with Hawaii Bicycling League.

When you hop on your Biki, you are now a bicyclist and have the same rules, rights and responsibilities as people driving motor vehicles. Here are a few of the key things to keep in mind.

Biking on sidewalks.
Hawaii state law prohibits bicycles on sidewalks in business districts (such as Downtown Honolulu and Waikiki). However, there are places (like residential areas) where it is legal to ride on a sidewalk. When you’re on a sidewalk or shared path, you must yield to pedestrians, make an audible signal to alert them (have you noticed the Biki bell on the handlebar?) and keep your speed below 10 mph. Your courtesy to others will be appreciated!

Ride with traffic
It is dangerous and illegal to ride against traffic, so always ride in the same direction as other moving vehicles. If there is plenty of room for a vehicle to pass you, like a wide shoulder, ride to the right and allow traffic to pass on your left. If there isn’t enough space, then ride in the middle of the right lane so you’re more visible and vehicles don’t try to squeeze by. It’s also important to stay super alert and assume drivers don’t see you—even when getting out of their parked car. Always err on the side of caution. You many also want to consider wearing bright colored clothing and reflective gear to make yourself more visible to motorists when riding.

Take advantage of bike facilities
We applaud the efforts of the City and County of Honolulu’s Department of Transportation Services (DTS) for their hard work in making Honolulu a bike-friendly city. They’ve recently announced the update of the O’ahu Bike Plan (2012), which will include a growing network of bikeways (like the two-way cycle track on South King Street) designed to be comfortable for novice and experienced bicyclists. We encourage you to use these bikeways and keep in mind that bikeways are designed for speeds of 8-12 mph. Already an avid user of Honolulu’s bikeways? Join us at the March 22nd public meeting to show your support for the city’s next planned cycle tracks on Pensacola St. and Ward Ave. (6:00pm Blaisdell Center, 777 Ward Ave, Pikake Room)

Wear a helmet
While it is not legally required for riders age 16 and older to wear a bike helmet, we recommend that you do. Biki helmets are available for a $20 donation at our headquarters (914 Ala Moana Blvd). You can also visit a number of local bike shops including Waikiki Bike Tours and Island Triathlon & Bike.

Most importantly, be alert and aware at all times when you are on a bicycle!

For more information on bicycle safety and rules for riding on Hawaii’s roadways, check out the following resources: AAA Hawaii’s Sharing the Road: A Guide to Safe Bicycling in Hawaii, City and County of Honolulu Department of Transportation,  Hawaii Bicycling League and biki12-23.test.

Safety tips also can be found on biki12-23.test and on the back of Biki maps found on the side of every Biki Stop kiosk.

Biki Free Ride Day
Help Biki reach 4,000 trips in one day on March 4

We are giving away one free ride, up to 30 minutes, to new Biki users on Sunday, March 4! Our goal is to achieve 4,000 Biki trips in one day. The program currently averages 2,008 rides per day.

This is a great opportunity for anyone who has not yet tried Biki to try it out for free. Simply enter the promo code, BIKI4K, using the Biki mobile app to purchase a single ride or at any of Biki’s 100 Biki Stop kiosks located from Downtown to Diamond Head. The promo code is valid from 12 a.m. to 11:59 p.m. on March 4, can be redeemed by new users and used once per person.

All current Biki pass holders are also encouraged to ride on March 4 and help Biki meet its goal. Prizes will be randomly awarded throughout the day to thank those for helping Biki attempt to beat the record! Follow @gobikihi for prize information.

Biki riders must be 16 years and older, and must register with a credit or debit card. Riders are encouraged to download the Biki App via the respective Apple or Google mobile app stores. The Biki App lets users know where stations are, and how many bikes and docks are available at each location. Riders can also view the map of Biki stops here.

Biki riders are reminded to follow Honolulu ordinances and heed any traffic guidance or detours that are in place.

The promotion code is valid for one bike rental, up to 30-minutes. Normal usage fees kick in after the 30-minute mark. Single rides are $3.50 for each 30 minutes of use after the initial free 30 minutes. A $50 security will still apply and will be released within 3-5 business days after the bike is returned.
For more information, visit biki12-23.test.

Plan: Free Spirit; I bought a free spirit pass because I love the flexibility of the pass, plus I do not have to worry about any of my minutes expiring.

Why I love Biki: I love Biki because it’s not just for people who are tall! I am 5’ and it can be challenging to find a bike that is safe and easy to ride. To all my vertically challenged friends, I recommend you try Biki. It is the best!

85% of Biki members opt for the Free Spirit Plan option. The bank of minutes offered by this popular plan allows for the most flexibility and is perfect for the spontaneous rider who is not ready to commit to a monthly option. On average, the 300-minute time bank lasts Free Spiriters about 4 months and provides around 25 rides (less than a dollar a trip!).

Have a Free Spirit Plan or thinking about getting one? Here are three reasons to make sure to sign up for the auto-reload feature:

1. More Bang for your Buck

Every time your Free Spirit balance gets down to 0 minutes, we'll automatically add 330 minutes to your remaining balance (a 30 minute bonus!). With our average member ride being about 18 minutes, that's nearly 2 free Biki trips each time!

2. Don't Worry About Overage Charges

If you're not careful, overage fees can add up if you exceed your 300-minute time bank! But on auto-reload, you'll always have minutes left.

3. 24/7 Access to Biki

Please note:

In honor of Valentine's Day, Ulupono Initiative asked riders why they love to Biki and shared a cute video on it's social media channels! A huge mahalo to our riders, partners and supporters for sharing the love.

What do you love about bikeshare? We love hearing from our riders what they love and how we can make Biki even better. Submit a testimonial to info@bikesharehawaii.org or share on social media @gobikihi.

Ulupono Initiative is a Hawaii-focused impact investing firm working to improve the quality of life for island residents in four key areas: locally produced food; clean, renewable energy; and better management of water and waste. Ulupono invested in Bikeshare Hawaii because our mission aligns with Ulupono's goal to reduce vehicle miles traveled (VMT) per capita and displace the amount of gasoline used by Oahu commuters. Their support was key in planning, launching and maintaining the Biki bikeshare system. Learn more.
