Stay tuned for Biki Buys customer competitions throughout November. Happy shopping!

Thank you for helping Biki achieve 180,272 rides in our first three months of operation! We’re excited to share statistics about our bikeshare system since the official launch of Biki on June 28, 2017. We’re happy to report steady growth in the average rides per day, increasing from 1,735 in July (including June 28-30), to 1,918 rides in August, to 2,101 rides in September.

Most Popular Plan

Of the three member plans offered, 78% of Biki users are opting to purchase the $20 Free Spirit Pass, which provides a bank of 300-minutes (or five hours) to use however and whenever. Members prefer the Free Spirit Pass as it enables them to ride spontaneously whether it’s a short 5-minute trip between locations or a longer 40-minute excursion.

Trip Duration

Biki members and casual riders use Biki differently. With an average trip duration of 14 minutes and 13 seconds, many members use Biki to commute, exercise, run errands and take other quick trips. Casual riders, however, are using Biki more for recreational purposes with an average trip duration of 28 minutes and 39 seconds. Overall, Biki riders’ average trip duration is 22 minutes and 25 seconds.

Where do our riders come from?

Most Popular Biki Stops: 6 in Waikiki, 2 in Ala Moana, 2 in Kakaako

Most Popular Rider Zip Codes:

  1. 96815 – Waikiki
  2. 96813 – Downtown/Chinatown
  3. 96826 – McCully/Moiliili

Although six out of the top 10 most popular Biki Stops are in Waikiki, user zip codes show that the popularity of bikeshare is not only due to visitors. Many Waikiki residents have discovered the benefits of Biki and find it a convenient transportation option to avoid parking, traffic and other hassles.

“We are very pleased with Biki’s high ridership after just three months of service,” said Lori McCarney, executive director of Bikeshare Hawaii, the nonprofit organization that launched and manages Biki. “Not only are residents using Biki to make short trips in town, but riders like the variety of fare plans available. We also cover a lot of miles in urban Honolulu, which equals less CO2 being emitted into the air and more calories burned, just a few of the many benefits of bikesharing.”

Bikeshare Benefits Business

In cities around the world, bikeshare has proven to provide a boost to local, small businesses by increasing street level traffic. Pedestrians and bicyclists are much more likely than motorists to notice small businesses and wander in to check out their wares.

In August we partnered with 20 Honolulu food and beverage establishments, all located within a short walk of a Biki Stop, to offer Biki riders exclusive deals. A post promo survey of businesses that participated in Biki’s first month-long program, Biki Bites, found:

Stay tuned for our November promo, Biki Buys!

“While the statistics from our initial three months are very positive, there is still a lot of for us to learn about how we can best serve the community. As such we continue to look for ways to have a presence in the community to listen to ideas and answer questions or concerns residents, visitors and businesses may have about Biki,” said McCarney. “We also are continuing our partnership with Hawaii Bicycling League to help ensure that users understand the rules of the road, refresh their biking skills, and how to most safely ride a Biki.”

Thanks for riding with us and supporting our initiative to make Honolulu a healthier, happier and more sustainable place to live and visit! We can’t wait to see what the next 3-months has in store for Biki and look forward to updating you on our progress.

We’re excited to announce Biki Buys, our upcoming promotional partnership with retail establishments across urban Honolulu! This promotion will take place during the month of November and will include a maximum of 20 retail establishments located within close proximity of a Biki Stop.

Similar to Biki Bites, Biki riders will be able to redeem exclusive deals at the participating establishments simply by showing their Biki pass, same day Biki receipt, or proof of their active account on the Biki Mobile App! Our first promo was catered towards food and drink businesses, so we’re excited to work with retail establishments to bring our riders shopping deals in time for the holiday season.

Introducing our Biki Operations Team Members

Ever wonder who keeps Biki Stops well maintained and stocked, answers all your customer service questions, and ensures that Biki bikes are set to ride each and every day? Here at Biki, we have an awesome team of local employees who are available 6 am – 11 pm 7 days a week (and 365 days a year!) working hard to ensure that our bikeshare program is ready for riders when they want to check out a Biki.

We recently polled several members of our operations team and asked them to answer some fun questions in order to learn more about their jobs as well as to get to know them better. One thing that they have in common since joining Biki? They all Biki whenever they can!

John, Operations Manager

What are you responsible for?

I am responsible for the all the operations of the Biki system, from maintenance, to cleanliness and making sure everyone has a bike or a dock available.

Do you have a favorite interaction with a Biki user to share?

I love all the stories I hear about people getting on bikes for the first time in many years, seeing people learning how to use bikes at the HBL workshops, and all the new adventures people are now able to do with Biki bikes available for them at any time.

Did you ride or own a bike prior to joining the Biki team? Do you use Biki?

Not for many years, but I now ride a Biki daily.

Jonathan, Field Technician

What are you responsible for?
My main role at Biki is to maintain and repair the bike share system. I also am responsible for testing and implementing system upgrades.

Why were you interested in joining Biki?
Living here in Hawaii, it is vital that we all take steps to ensure a sustainable future. A bikeshare system provides a service that is fun and allows people to take part in this effort. Riding Biki reduces the amount of car traffic we have on our already overcrowded streets, and the carbon emissions that go along with that.

Do you have a favorite interaction with a Biki user to share?
One day out in the field an older gentleman approached me to let me know how much he loved the system. He told me that since he no longer drives, he only used to take short walks to nearby stores and the market. It’s probably been almost 40 years since he has been on a bike and he was reluctant to ever get on a bike again. His neighbor was using the system regularly and gave him the courage to try it. “It was like I never forgot,” he said. He started with short trips to the nearby market he was familiar with then slowly going further. In a matter of a month, he is going places that he wouldn’t have before. He now rides a Biki to meet friends every Thursday for breakfast.

Do you use Biki?
Absolutely! I don’t live in town but when I come in, I ride Biki. Everyone knows parking is hard in Honolulu especially during events. It takes the stress out of finding a place to park.

Marisa, Administrative Manager

What are you responsible for?
I am in charge of all HR needs for the company, all of the office operations, policies and procedures, and the Call Center.

Why were you interested in joining Biki?
I really wanted to be involved with a company that contributes positively to the community. I wanted to have a job I can be proud of.

Do you have a favorite interaction with a Biki user to share?
At a recent Eat the Street event, I watched a Biki volunteer teach a new user how to ride a bike. The new rider was so excited to ride a bike for the first time!

Do you use Biki?
I do use Biki. I find it very enjoyable to bike, and it puts me in a good mood.

Mary, Financial Accountant

What are you responsible for?

Overseeing the income and expenses for Biki.

Why were you interested in joining Biki?

It is environmentally friendly.

Do you use Biki?

Yes, every weekend.

Lorenzo, Bicycle Mechanic

What are you responsible for?

Fixing, maintaining and washing the Biki bikes.

Did you ride or own a bike prior to joining the Biki team?

Yes, I have my own personal bike that I commute with every day.

Do you use Biki?

I ride a Biki bike every Monday, Wednesday and Thursday.

Edwin, Bicycle Mechanic

What are you responsible for?

I’m responsible for ensuring that the bikes are clean, maintained, safe, and operating properly.

Why were you interested in joining Biki?

The concept of having more people riding bikes is really good for Oahu because it lessens the burden of traffic congestion in urban Honolulu, promotes a healthy lifestyle, and decreases the demand for fossil fuel.

Do you use Biki?

Whenever I’m in town I ride the Biki bikes.

Anything else you wish to share about your job or experience with Biki?

Ever since working for Biki, I get to explore more of downtown. I get to see all these businesses that I never knew existed and see all of the amazing art in Kakaako.

BIKI/BIKESHARE HAWAII IN THE COMMUNITY

September was a busy month for Biki as we joined forces with local organizations to promote health, the environment and bicycling.

On September 19, Biki teamed up with Hawaii Bicycling League and Blue Zones Hawaii for a “Built Environment Tour” that started at the State Capitol and through town including the two cycle tracks. The goal of the ride was to highlight infrastructure needs to promote active communities and Complete Streets in Hawaii.

On September 20, Biki and Hawaii Bicycling League members participated in a four hour ride to kick off the Hawaii Congress of Planning Officials Conference. Bikeshare Hawaii in partnership with Toole Design Group and HHF Planners won an award for transportation planning!

We were excited to participate in Blue Planet’s EV Parade on September 17 for Drive Electric Week. We drove our EV smart car with a Biki on the back. Three separate “parades” around town culminated at Kapiolani Community College for an EV party where community members’ EVs were showcased. It was an awesome way to bring together advocates and EV owners!

We enjoyed chatting with everyone who stopped by our booth at Aloha Festival’s Waikiki Hoolaulea on September 23.

The Annual Waikīkī Ho‘olaule‘a is Hawai‘i’s largest block party, featuring food, fun and entertainment along Kalakaua Avenue (from Seaside to Ohua). There will be performances by the various genres of Hawaiian music and hula hālau (hula schools). Hawaiian crafts and flower leis and many varieties of island cuisine will be featured throughout the event.

This popular community event attracts thousands of participants who typically arrive by bus, foot, car and uber/taxi. But now that bikeshare’s in town, residents and visitors have an alternative way to get to and from the Ho’olaule’a that is inexpensive, convenient and fun! Biki Stop 321 on Kalakaua and Seaside is located at the very start of Hoolaulea, so ride on down to this year’s event and avoid parking, traffic and other problems.

Don’t worry about arriving to a full station this Saturday evening. We’ll have staff available at Biki Stop 321 on Kalakaua & Seaside from 6:30pm-10:30pm to help dock your bike and accommodate the influx of riders. Participate in our Women's Bike Month social media competition!

Women account for only 34% of bikeshare users in the US and biki hopes to change this here in Honolulu. During the planning process, Executive Director Lori McCarney wanted to design a system that would encourage women to use bikeshare. As a result, the biki bike has slightly smaller wheels and is 10 pounds lighter than the standard bikeshare bicycle, making it easier to handle and more comfortable for riders of smaller statue.

Throughout the month of September we're joining bikeshare networks, including NYC's Citi Bike and Portland's Biketown, in celebrating Women's Bike Month! In honor of the celebration, we'd like to thank our Biki Women by offering the chance to score some free rides. To enter, post photos on Instagram, Twitter or Facebook with the tags #WomenWhoBike and #GoBikiHI. Winners will be randomly selected and contacted via social media throughout the remainder of the month.

We're proud to be a women-led organization and thankful for all the Biki Women who ride with us every day!

Follow @GoBikiHI on social media and subscribe to our newsletter to stay in the loop about future competitions!

Bikeshare is a great way for not only seasoned cyclists to experience Honolulu by bicycle, but also helps get people back on bikes who haven’t thought about bicycling in a while. There are many that haven’t ridden since childhood, and Biki gives them the opportunity to bring back the feeling of youth, freedom, and enjoyment of wind in their hair. (more…)
