are we allowed to ride and is it safe?

While we must all do our part to slow the spread of coronavirus by social distancing and staying at home as much as possible, research shows that it may come at the cost of our mental health and well-being. I know I’m not the only one who’s felt a little stir crazy staying home all day. Thankfully, biking (my favorite outdoor activity) is considered a low-risk activity and it is not currently a restricted activity in the State of Hawaiʻi! Biki riders can rest assured that we are taking extra precautions to ensure our kiosks, bikes, and stations are regularly and thoroughly disinfected for your safety.

What equipment should I wear?

Hawaii's mask mandate, requires everyone on O‘ahu to wear face coverings over their noses and mouths at indoor public spaces as well as outdoor areas. However, there are a few circumstances exempt from the Order, such as when individuals are engaging in physical activity.

While you are NOT required to wear a mask on a Biki bike, it's good to have one in your back pocket in case you need to stop somewhere. It's not recommended to breathe through a damp or sweaty mask, but if you choose to wear a face covering while riding, consider this full-face visor attached to a bicycle helmet! If you are a first responder and use your bike to help during the pandemic, they will even donate one to you.

Recent research has found it’s likely that 90 percent or more of the virus when found on a surface will be inactivated after being exposed to midday sunlight for between 11 and 34 minutes.  However, you should continue to do everything you can to mitigate the spread of coronavirus. Bring some hand sanitizer or wipes with you to use before and after your ride, or wash your hands with soap as soon as possible. And, remember not to touch your face! The virus can enter the body through the nose, mouth or eyes. I know we all get that urge to wipe the sweat away, but for now you’ll have to let it drip!

Using bikeshare is no riskier than interacting with other shared surfaces such as doorknobs, handrails and benches, so the same prevention tips apply.

Boost your immune system!

As long as you are not already sick or showing symptoms, exercising and cycling could actually boost your immune system. Cycling not only keeps you physically strong, but also positively affects your mood and emotions. The mind-body connection is so powerful that being happy can lead to a healthier and longer life!

Absolutely DO NOT exercise if you are already sick, have symptoms such as a fever and cough, or have been exposed to someone who has tested positive for COVID-19. “Sweating it out” is a myth and can prolong your illness AND you can put others at risk of catching your illness. Other than exercise, plenty of sleep and a healthy diet with plenty of fruits and vegetables are highly recommended.

Is it safe to ride in groups?

Biking remains one of the best activities to stay socially distant while still enjoying the company of your family and friends! This is one of the reasons the popular Kalakaua Open Street Sundays events have been extended through the end of July. The safest option is to exercise outside alone, rather than in gyms with big groups of people. It's a good idea to maintain 6ft of physical distance when riding and while at Biki Stops.

RECENT UPDATES

Updates: July 26th event has been CANCELLED due to the possible threat of Hurricane Douglas.

Kalakaua Open Streets Sundays has been extended through July due to the popularity of the program. The pilot program will also be extended to Hotel Street in Chinatown on July 11 from 4pm - 9pm.

Open streets

"Open Streets" are programs that temporarily close roads normally reserved for vehicular traffic and instead open them up to walkers, bikers and joggers. This concept has been implemented across the globe, especially through this pandemic, to encourage residents to get outdoors and exercise, while still being able to adhere to social distancing guidelines. Honolulu's pilot program launched the morning of Sunday, June 14 on Kalakaua Ave in Waikiki and has since been extended through July. These weekly events attract residents from across the island excited by the opportunity to ride or walk safely along this iconic street.

The Open Street Sundays initiative, organized by The City and County of Honolulu and the Hawai‘i Bicycling League, was inspired by other cities across the globe who are repurposing streets during a time of low vehicular traffic. Montreal has announced plans to build over 200 miles of new pedestrian and bike paths this summer and Rome will be constructing 93 miles of temporary and permanent bike routes. In addition, New Orleans, San José, Las Vegas, and Boston are helping restaurants recover by laying the groundwork for outdoor dining spaces. (Source: NACTO)

December - Jennifer L. & Keith S.

Plan: Voyager Plan - unlimited 60 minute trips

Best Biki Tip: Encourage your friends to give it a try. I got my partner and my brother to sign up and now we can all enjoy going for rides together.

"For me (Jennifer), Biki is a hobby that keeps me active. Since signing up, I have since changed my diet, lost 33 pounds, and my confidence and overall well-being has improved. We live in the Waikiki area and ride to Kapahulu Safeway, Don Quiote, Ala Moana, Whole Foods and Ohana Hale Marketplace. We now spend less on Uber rides and taxis because Biki gets us where we need to go."

November - Tatia-Jenay M.

Plan: Voyager - unlimited 60 minute trips

"During quarantine, Biki has been an inexpensive and convenient way to get exercise. I ride to and from work, to see my relatives, and to explore the new bike paths recently installed around town."

Biki Tip: After you finish your ride and dock your bike, try to pull it out again just to make extra sure it’s locked securely. If it comes out, use more force until you see the green light.

October - Tomoko D.

Plan: Commuter Plan - unlimited 30 minute trips

Best Biki Tip: Get a monthly (Commuter) membership! It offers unlimited rides so you can use Biki anytime you want and it is very affordable at only $15/Month.

"Biki has been my primary mode of transportation since August 2017, so I am so glad it continued service during COVID-19. It's socially distant, convenient and provides a nice bike whenever and wherever I want."

September - Jimmy H.

Plan: Free Spirit Plan - Bank of 300 minutes to use in any increment

"I live right in town in the Ala Moana/Kaka’ako area, and Biki is so convenient to get around. Before COVID-19, I used Biki to get to SALT Kakaako for my fitness classes at Orangetheory, meet up with friends for a bite to eat, grocery shop at farmers markets and Whole Foods, or go to Waikiki without worrying about parking.  When I participated in some of the running events like Hapalua, Kings Runner, etc. I would use Biki to get to the race/starting line.

Now during quarantine life, I use Biki as a form of exercise. I’ve been definitely putting in some pedaling mileage.

I hear a lot of my friends say, “It’s been years since I’ve been on a bike,” so I tell them to give Biki a try and they always seem to end up having fun.
IMG_3525

Best Biki Tip: Get and use the Biki App!!! You literally can unlock a Biki from your phone without having to carry your membership card/wallet. It’s also very easy to use and convenient when planning your trips. I always check the app and browse the stations that are at or near my destination to see if there are open docks, if not then I have a backup.

August - Tony M.

Plan: Voyager Plan - unlimited 60 minute trips

Best Biki Tip: Always learn from your mistakes on the road, you are not perfect. The goal is to learn to improve yourself.

"I became a member in February right before COVID-19 and it has made my quarantine life much better. Biki helps me to condition my body and gives me the freedom to ride all over town from Waikiki and Ala Moana, all the way to Downtown and Iwilei!"

July - Shazlyn

Plan: Free Spirit Plan - Bank of 300 minutes to use in any increment

"I bought the Free Spirit Plan because I really wanted to learn to ride a bike during COVID. I was determined to learn by the time the 300 minutes was up. And guess what? I learned in 60 minutes! Now I have all this extra time to ride around and have fun!”

Best Biki Tip: To all my fellow people just learning to ride a bike: just keep pedaling! I know it’s really scary and you want to plant your feet on the floor so you don’t fall… but you need to trust yourself!

June - Richard W.

Plan: Free Spirit Plan

Best Biki Tip: Find a Biki stop outside Waikiki and ride in - you'll enjoy the exercise, and might see things that otherwise you miss because you are going too fast in a car. When you return the bike, use both hands and push it in firmly. The green light will turn on if you did it right.

"We are new to Biki and became members in June 2020 to participate in the Kalakaua Open Street Sundays. It was much easier for us to rent a bike than to bring our bikes from Kailua. We biked multiple circuits of Kalakaua for an hour of exercise before hitting the restaurants for ono grinds, and then going for a swim. Kalakaua Open Street Sundays and Biki bike rentals make it so easy for local families to enjoy Waikiki while helping the merchants there. It has since been our main form of exercise while in quarantine."

May - Jet808x

Plan: Commuter Plan - unlimited 30 minute rides per month

Best Biki Tip: Make sure you follow the rules of the road and use all standard safety precautions even though less people are on the road.

"As a owner of multiple rentals, I would always recommend Biki to our guests. But, since our guests are not here due to Covid-19, I decided to ride instead. It's been great cruising Ala Moana beach park and other areas during the pandemic. We use hand sanitizer spray to wipe down bike and off we go!" @Jet808x

April - Dr. Jonathan Chung

Plan: Free Spirit Plan

Favorite Place to Biki: Home! After a long day of work. There are stations just steps away from both my office and my home.

"Honolulu is the perfect place for the ride sharing type of transportation.  We have great weather and a small urban center that allows for short commutes.  I can get from Ala Moana to Aloha Tower in 15 minutes or less. Biki is healthy, environmentally-friendly and surprisingly fun."

March - Mimi L.

Plan: Voyager Plan - unlimited 60 minute rides per month

Best Biki Tip: I've realized that there are other ways to workout...it may not be a gym or something you're used to, but this is the perfect time to try something new. I do my part by bringing Clorox wipes with me to wipe down  the seat and handlebars before and after each ride.

"I am a very active person and need some form of daily exercise. After my gym closed down because of coronavirus, I decided to sign up for a Biki membership. Since bike riding is considered an essential activity, and because there's a Biki Stop located just down the street, it's been an amazing way to get exercise and fresh air."

Akiko Biki Bike

February - Akiko A.

Plan: Commuter Plan

Akiko is an employee of G70, one of 7 organizations participating in the first-ever Oahu Commute Challenge. This month-long event, hosted by STCH, challenges employees to switch up their commute to work and try more sustainable options such as walking, biking, the bus, or carpooling.

Favorite Place to Biki: Makiki to Downtown along the King Street Protected Bikeway.

"Don’t be afraid to try Biki.  Start with a friend and get confident riding together.  You become more aware of your surroundings and the importance of sharing the road.  You are also able to enjoy the outside!  Why not?"

January - Anthony C.

Plan: Commuter Plan - unlimited 30 minute rides per month

Best Biki Tip: Get Hawaii Bicycling League's Oahu Bike Map, digitally or paper copy, to find the lowest stress, most fun bicycle routes.  It's the best piece of safety equipment you can have and you'll find that many Biki stations are located on or near low-stress routes.

"I have a personal bike, but still use Biki for short trips and when visiting public places that do not have secure bike storage. Biki is a great, inexpensive, way to get back into bicycling.  The bicycles are perfect for beginner cyclists, leisure or commute."

December - Kiana O.

Plan: Commuter Plan

Best Biki Tip: If you're a bit nervous about biking in Honolulu, go with a friend and try out routes that have less traffic and slower car speeds. It's also more fun to Biki with a friend!

Favorite Place to Biki: Around Kapiʻolani Park

"I don't live in town, so I normally take the bus in for work and then use Biki to go to work meetings, lunch, pau hana, yoga, the Kakaʻako Farmers Market, appointments, etc. Biki allows me to get to my bus stop faster and without walking a far distance alone, especially at night. More recently, I have also been using my Commuter Plan for leisure and exercise because I love riding a bike."

November - Alexander D.

Plan: Commuter Plan - unlimited 30 minute rides per month

Favorite Place to Biki: Waikiki Beach

"Biki makes it easy to not have to own a car in the city, which definitely cuts down on my carbon footprint. As a writer, it's also important to have a flexible transportation option that can accommodate my schedule. As such, Biki helps me to commute to various jobs in and around Waikiki, cruise to the beach, library, and several other destinations that were once too inconvenient due to limited parking."

October - Eileen R.

Plan: Commuter Plan

Best Biki Tip: Use the app! I like to plan my routes according to the availability and location of the Biki Stations near me.

"I initially signed up for Biki because several of my classes at UH Manoa were right next to the Biki stations. Nowadays, I use Biki when traffic is jammed, buses are slow, or I just have somewhere to go.  The diverse and abundant stop locations make the already affordable membership even more worth it."

September - JoAnna S.

Plan: Commuter Plan - unlimited 30 minute rides per month

Biki Tip:  After adjusting the Biki seat to your preferred height, make sure to lock the latch to keep the seat in place.  A loose, spinning seat is never fun while riding!

"We are a one-car household and sometimes it’s a coordinated effort between my husband and I as to who gets the car.  With Biki, I can go on my own time and the docking stations are plentiful so it’s easy to hop on a bike and Biki off to wherever I need to go. Whether that’s to work, home, picking up my daughter from school, or just to get a little sweat on and my heart rate up. Plus, not having to worry about parking is a major plus!"

August - Tae K

Plan: $15 Monthly Employer Plan

Favorite Place to Biki: Home!

"I'm on an employer plan and can easily commute from my house to my work at Kapiolani Medical Center. Having Biki as an option is convenient, relaxing and a good stress reliever. Best of all - I don't need to worry about people stealing my tires."

July - John & Lisa B.

Plan: $25 Monthly - unlimited 60 minute rides per month

Best Biki Tip: Use the Biki App to scope out other stations near your destination before you leave.  Most of the time there will be an open dock but every once in a while it fills up while you’re on the way.  Sometimes it’s better to head directly to an emptier station than have to back track if the one you want fills up.

"Biki is an easy way to get people riding again.  There’s safety in numbers, not just for people riding bikes but for everyone on the street.  With more people engaged in the community (for example, it’s much easier to say good morning to a person walking when you’re riding a bike than when driving a car), it creates a safety net of people who make the streets are safer for everyone.  Biki has made our community more of an ʻohana."

June - Mariah & Kevin

Plan: $15 Monthly + Free Spirit Plan

Biki Tip: Nobody has ever died from being late. Ride safe for yourself and for others. There's not always bike lanes or enough seconds to make the light. No worries, be safe.

During the last year Mariah took over 1250 Biki trips, making her our top female rider! We reached out to learn more about her story were so impressed we decided to crown her and her partner Biki Member(s) of the Month, since they Biki'ed to breakfast for their first date. Read Mariah's full story here.

May - Dabney

Plan: $15 Monthly - unlimited 30 minute rides per month

Favorite place to Biki - Ala Moana Beach Park

Biki Tip - Use Biki in neighborhoods with limited parking. I just went to an event in Kakaako where everyone else ended up paying to valet their personal cars because there was no street parking. I Biki'ed and docked right out front like a champ.

"I love how Biki has led to so many more people cycling in Honolulu, because that helps justify more bike lanes in more places. Biki makes cycling better even for those riding their own bikes. I love seeing and saying hello to people I ride past on my commute every day - try that in a car!"

April - Kathleen

Plan: Free Spirit Plan

Biki Tip: when using Biki to get to big events with large crowds, locate a Biki stop right before your actual destination by using the Biki app, and park your Biki bike there. By researching nearby stops before your targeted location, you raise your odds of finding a free slot where you can dock your bike!

"As someone who lives and works in town, Biki has been an amazing addition to my transportation options. I’ve been using this bike share program since the very first day it launched in 2017. I feel very lucky to have a Biki stop in front of my apartment building. I save gas money, get to places faster, and take in some fresh air and light exercise as well! I’ve used Biki to cross off parking worries when going to events with big crowds like Art After Dark, the Great Aloha Run, the Honolulu Marathon, and concerts at the Blaisdell. Mahalo, Biki!

Favorite place to Biki - Ala Moana Beach Park

Biki Tip - Let the automobiles have the right-of-way. Don't assume that they are going to stop for you. Be a defensive Biki rider and enjoy the ride.

"I like the convenience and affordability of Biki. There's a Biki rack where I live and one where I work. It's the ideal situation."

February - Karen

Plan: $15 Monthly

Best Place to Biki: I had several great runs along Kapiolani Blvd and Ala Wai Blvd

"I didn't want to bring my own bike on my vacation and Biki is everywhere so I signed up for a membership. The $15 monthly option is a deal, even for a week-long visit.  The bikes were comfortable, easy to undock and dock and the built-in lighting was a plus when I misjudged a sunset. I rode all over Honolulu and Waikiki. Pedaled to the community college, dropped off the Biki, did the Diamond Head climb, returned to the station, and pedaled home. On the last day I felt nostalgic as I racked my Biki."

January - Luke

Plan: Free Spirit Plan - 300 minutes to use however and whenever you like.

Favorite place to Biki - To catch the sunset at the beach! I ride from my place in Makiki to the new station at Barefoot Beach Cafe.

"I got rid of my car about a year ago because parking outside my place was such a pain. I now use Biki for almost all in-town trips and then my motorcycle to get around the rest of the island. It's definitely a money saver. I ride almost every day and it amazes me how long these minutes actually last."

Plan: Free Spirit Plan - 300 minutes to use however and whenever you like. This member also takes advantage of auto-reload, so every time her balance gets down to zero minutes we fill it up with 330 minutes instead!

"Commuting to work is much easier with the newly installed Biki stations in Makiki. I am now able to bike all the way to my block instead of stopping at the Piikoi/King St station then walking the rest of the way. There are at least three Biki Stops within two blocks away from me. Instead of sitting in morning traffic, I can Biki from my home to work in less than 10 mins. It's a win win for me and the environment."

November - Marion

Plan: Free Spirit Plan - 300 minutes to use however and whenever you like.

Why? The bank of 300 minutes allows me some flexibility; I feel at ease knowing that I can ride from point A to point B within 5 minutes without having to fork the 30 minute single ride fee and still be able to have the remainder of the minutes available for the next trip.

"It brings the "Fun" back in commuting to and from work. I work at an architecture firm in Downtown and I route permits to and from the Honolulu Building Department about 15 times each month.  It takes me approximately 15-20 minutes when I am walking versus 5 minutes when Biki-ing."

October - Lori

Plan: $15 Month - Unlimited 30-minute trips every day.

In honor of Women's Bike Month, we have decided to feature the Biki Lady herself. For the past 4 years, Lori has served as the CEO of Bikeshare Hawaii with the mission to bring bikeshare to Hawaii. One of her goals, when selecting the equipment and launching the program, was to encourage ridership among women, who make up only 34% of bikeshare users nationally. As a result, the Biki bike is actually 10lbs less and easier to maneuver than equipment in other cities. We're proud that women represent 44% of Biki members. This mother of three, accomplished ironman triathlete and daily Biki rider will be retiring from Bikeshare Hawaii at the end of the month. Be sure to look for her riding around town rocking a Biki hat and high-heels. Mahalo for all your hard work, Lori, and best of luck on all your future endeavors.

Lori brings in "Mike" the Citi Bike and "Jen" the Pronto Bike to the KHON2 studio to talk about Bikeshare in 2015. Watch it here.

September - Elizabeth & Steve

Plan: Free Spirit Plan - 300 minutes to use however and whenever you like.

Why? We chose the free spirit pass because of its flexibility. We like knowing it doesn’t expire, and the auto-pay for renewal has proven to be seamless.

"After a cumulative 80+ year hiatus, Biki Bikes have put these two retirees back in the saddle again! It’s true: one doesn’t forget how to bicycle! We appreciate Biki Bikes because they’re convenient, fun, and reduce time spent driving. We live downtown and have found Biki Bikes extends the geographic range of places we can easily get to without having to get into a car. Biki Bike parking is available near our apartment building, and usually within a block or two of the destinations we visit. The docking stations are easy to use, the bicycles are sturdy and well-maintained. Maybe the most surprising discovery is that in our mid-sixties we still find bicycling fun! We will arrive at our destination feeling exhilarated and fully alive. It’s a fun way to get good exercise."

August - Dan

Plan: Free Spirit Plan - 300 minutes to use however and whenever you like.

Why?  It gives me a pool of minutes to use and I use it in waves so I don’t have to worry about my minutes expiring.

"I love Biki because I don't have to worry about parking. My appointments vary week to week and if it’s within a couple of miles of my office, I Biki."

July - Ying

Plan: $25 Monthly Plan - unlimited 60 minute rides.

Why? Why not? It's the best one and its a small price to pay. I use Biki to commute to my workplace at the UH Cancer Center, during my lunch hour, and for fun with my husband for fun in the evenings and weekends.

"The bicycle is comfortable. I no longer have to worry about getting my bicycle stolen and my husband is happy to not fix my flat tires anymore!  I like having the option to commute one-way and take the bus home if the weather is bad. In my mind, if you can't get there by Biki, it ain't worth going."

Why?  I grew up in Mililani and I realized how bad our traffic problems were becoming! I ride Biki because I want to be a part of a better solution for commuting to and from destinations.

"I like the flexibility of Biki. You don't need to scour for parking or worry about your personal bike having mechanical issues. It's easy and the bikes are high quality. Using different bikeshare systems around the world and USA is my new hobby now. "

May - Mariah

Plan: Free Spirit Plan - 300 minutes to use however and whenever you like. This member also takes advantage of auto-reload, so every time her balance gets down to zero minutes we fill it up with 330 minutes instead!

Why?  I enjoy the flexibility of the 300 minutes because I can use them as needed and not worry about having them expire.

"I use Biki because it makes traveling around town far more convenient and even fun! I commute from the North Shore daily, but have to travel between jobs in downtown and Waikiki. At one point it took me 40 minutes to get from Waikiki to downtown after finding parking and walking to work. Biki is a godsend as it only takes 15 minutes, plus it adds pleasure to your day by allowing you to enjoy the fresh air and sunshine. Biki makes me more appreciative of Hawaii because it makes commuting fun, healthy, and stress free. I even invested in a water proof backpack so I could take Biki in the rain with no concern for my laptop."

Plan: $25 Monthly Plan - unlimited 60-minute rides

Why?  For my purposes, 60 minute rides is more than enough for 95% of everywhere I need to go.  $25 is a great value!

"Biki’s a high.  Its fun.  It energizes me.  Its helping me get in shape.  I’m 60 but Biki makes me feel like a teen.  It’s a newfound freedom where I can travel all over the city in less time.  Combined with ride sharing and the bus, the options are endless.  I’m self-employed and it adds hours to my workweek not having to deal with traffic and parking.  My wife and I joke we can’t remember where we last parked our car.  I’ve reduced my gasoline consumption by 80% and gained 3 or 4 hours a week not sitting in a car going nowhere.  Bicycle quality is fantastic and very easy for a big guy to pedal."

March - Cody

Plan: $25 Monthly Plan - unlimited 60-minute rides

Why? I chose this plan because of the flexibility it offers me to go on longer distance rides. I can go for a good hour-long ride in the morning without any interruptions. Biki helps me stay in shape, and is way more fun and cost efficient than a gym membership.

"As a student of Urban and Regional Planning at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, I am thrilled to see our city being proactive towards offering alternatives to automobile transportation. Biki will take more cars off the roads, which will reduce green house gas emissions and relieve congestion on our busy streets! Biki also is an affordable commuting option for those who can't afford the bus pass. Most importantly, it's healthy and fun! I wake up every morning and take Biki around town and along the coast for an early morning workout. It's the perfect way to start my day!"

February - Jenn

Plan: Free Spirit - $20 for a bank of 300 minutes to use however and whenever you like.

Why? Jenn loves the flexibility of the Free Spirit Plan and appreciates not having to worry about the minutes expiring.

"I love Biki because it's not just for people who are tall! I am 5’ and it can be challenging to find a bike that is safe and easy to ride. To all my vertically challenged friends, I recommend you try Biki. It is the best!"

January - Lisette

Plan:  Free Spirit - $20 for a bank of 300 minutes to use however and whenever you like

Why? Lisette uses Biki mainly for casual rides and lighthearted adventures, so she opted for the flexible Free Spirit option.

"I really enjoy the bike stations, not having to find parking, and not having to own a bike since my place has no room to store one. I think it's great during events around downtown when parking can be scarce"

December - Vinnie

Plan: $15 Monthly - unlimited 30-minute rides each month.

Why? Vinnie completed over 600 trips in just 5-months, making him one of our top riders. He chose the $15 monthly membership since it is the most cost-effective option someone who rides so frequently!

"I likes Bikeshare because it takes away the stress of commuting and eliminates the need for a car while living in Waikiki"

Another year in the books! We are proud to have reached three years of service and couldn’t have done it without your support. We’ll be Biki riding for our birthday during this weekend’s Kalakaua Open Street Sundays event, and hope you will too!

As an essential business that provides the community with a 24/7 transportation service, Biki has continued operating throughout the pandemic.  However, like so many businesses, Biki has had to shift operating procedures to help fight the spread of COVID-19. Jono Mauri, General Manager at Secure Bike Share (Biki's financing and operating partner), shares how the Biki Crew has adapted in order to keep Biki riders and the community safe.

Secure Bike Share works with Bikeshare Hawaii to run the Biki program. Since launch, Secure has been responsible for all day to day operations including customer service, rebalancing, bike maintenance, and site installation.

How has the day-to-day operations of biki changed?

Even before COVID-19, we employed a full-time station cleaner to ensure Biki equipment was clean for riders. We have since enhanced this effort by shifting resources that normally designated to other parts of Biki's daily operations to instead aid our station cleaner in disinfecting bikes, kiosks, and stations.  We have also continued to analyze the station usage of the Biki Stops located near hospitals and other health facilities to ensure our system is accessible for essential workers.

It is hard to forecast what the future holds with COVID-19. Even though restrictions are starting to ease for local businesses, we plan to maintain our new cleaning protocols to ensure the safety, accessibility and cleanliness of our system moving forward.

How are you protecting your staff?

We closed Biki HQ to the public beginning in March and allowed staff, such as call center agents, to work from home whenever possible. We have put in place social distancing protocols for both our office and warehouse staff members and our field crew is required to wear gloves and face coverings and disinfect the Biki vans before and after each shift.

Have you noticed any new trends or changes in ridership?

Understandably, we've noticed some changes in ridership trends due to COVID-19. Our downtown stations have seen a significant decrease in use as a result of the stay-at-home orders with more residents now working from home. Fewer workers downtown mean fewer daily Biki work commuters, which traditionally made up a large portion of our riders. While we're seeing fewer rides, we're also seeing longer rides. This is likely because more people are using Biki for exercise and recreation. Our highest ride day since pre-COVID19 was on June 21, during the most recent Open Street Sundays Event along Kalakaua. We're happy to see so many members come out for this community initiative and hope you'll join us at the next one.

We recently opened up a member survey and hope to learn more about COVID related ridership trends from our members. If you're an active Biki Member, we would greatly appreciate you taking a few minutes to give us feedback.
